The wooden handle appears to have been oiled rather than coated with a paint or shellac. The stainless steel part is shiny and has one noticeable flaw of a roughness near where it joins the handle.     This kind of masher was used mostly for vegetables, mostly turnips and potatoes, but also carrots...  Item is very clean and almost totally free of aging characteristics.  It is a really nice looking antique.  The wooden handle appears to have been oiled rather than coated with a paint or shellac.  The stainless steel part is shiny and has one noticeable flaw of a roughness near where it joins the handle.  See the pictures.
